An iconic historical and cultural city, London graces the banks of the mighty Thames river on the island of Great Britain. A two millennia old settlement it has grown from its Roman 1.12-square-mile medieval boundaries to span over 600 square miles and provide home to over 8 million people, making it the second most densely populated city in Europe next to Paris. London boasts a depth and breath-taking history from the collapse of Roman rule in the 5th century to Danelaw imposed by the vikings in the mid 800's to the crowning of William, the Duke of Normandy following his victory in the Battle of Hasting in the newly finished Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066.
London continued to make its mark from the artists of the Tudor period like Shakespeare to the Great Fire of London in 1666 to the crime ridden era of the late 18th century. The late 1800's and early 1900's were difficult times given increased traffic, disease and crime. But These tough times led to the great ingenuity like the world's first urban rail network, the printing press which increased literacy and better organized policing. War ravaged London in both the first and second World Wars, but as was its character London continued to prosper. The 1900's saw London grow to be the mecca of cultural diversity and vibrancy that continues today.
This London map, illustrated by Chris Robitaille prior to the inception of Xplorer Maps, serves as both a city street map as well as marks the attractions that represent the historical significance of this great city. At its center stands the imposing Houses of Parliament, the iconic ‘Big Ben’ clock tower and Westminster Abbey, site of British monarch coronations. The London map also features iconic landmarks like Regent's and Hyde parks, the Tower Bridge, St. Paul's Cathedral, Piccadilly Circus and the infamous London Double Decker Buses. The list of elements included in this hand-drawn London map go on and on and each is captured with true Chris Robitaille attention to detail and artistry.
