Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of one of the United States’ most treasured national parks, located in northern Montana on the Canadian border as well as part of the Rocky Mountains, Glacier National Park.

Established in 1910, Glacier National Park was created to protect the glacially carved ecosystem, home to once 150 active glaciers and 25 active glaciers today. The park is within the larger physical region extending across the U.S/ Canadian border called, “Crown of the Continent.” This larger area has been referred to by different names by the indigenous tribes native to the area including the Salish/Kootenai who called the park, “the place where there is a lot of ice,” as well as “Backbone of the World,” by the Blackfeet tribe, whose reservation borders the eastern boundary of the park. This region comprises not only Glacier National Park, but also the Canadian park on its northern border, Waterton Lake National Park as well as other neighboring wilderness and recreation areas such as Great Bear Wilderness, Flathead National Forest, and the Whitefish Range. Verifying the reverence included in the name of the larger physical region as well as its traditional name given by the tribes, Glacier National Park has some of the most picturesque landscapes and wildlife views that attract close to 3 million visitors per year.

People from all over the world travel to the park to experience firsthand the grandeur of standing glaciers including: Blackfoot Glacier, Grinnell Glacier, Sperry Glacier, Logan Glacier, Red Eagle Glacier and Jackson Glacier, which can be seen from the famous, Going to the Sun Road, a scenic drive through the park offering views of the mountain peaks, alpine lakes and glaciers. Along with the splendor created by the glaciers of the park, a variety of hiking trails bring people to experience awe-inspiring scenes of many of the park’s impressive mountains, passes and peaks and mesmerizing alpine lakes such as: Lake McDonald (famous for its photogenic scenery of clear water capturing vibrantly colored lake rocks) St. Mary Lake, Bowman Lake, Two Medicine Lake, Avalanche Lake, Logan Pass, Siyeh Pass, Mount Cleveland, Mount Stimson, Kintla Peak, Mount Jackson and more. Not only can visitors enjoy the park by hiking, camping, backpacking, rafting and biking, but visitors have enjoyed touring the park since 1914 via “Rubies of the Rockies,” red buses with rollback tops that were the second step of more relaxed touring when it first was done by horse tours and then moved to taking people across the park in the iconic red buses. Adding to the true definition of unique, Glacier is home to a special peak, Triple Divide Peak, which is the location of where three major watersheds are partitioned. Depending on which side of the peak a drop of water falls, it can end up in any of the three major watersheds the peak divides and send that drop of water to one of three different oceans.

In addition to the more scenic areas of the park for visitors to truly dive into the backcountry aspect of Glacier, tourists and locals enjoy the smaller communities, towns and chalets spread along the border and throughout the park featured on the map including: Lake McDonald Lodge, the Sperry Chalet (century-old cabin just west of Lake McDonald), Belton Chalet, Polebridge with the famous Polebridge Mercantile, Many Glacier Hotel, Glacier Park Lodge, and more.

Not only does Glacier offer sights of unmatched beauty from mountains, lakes, and glaciers, visitors get a glimpse of unbelievable wildlife including: moose, grizzly bears, wolves, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, black bears, marmot, golden eagles, elk, western cutthroat trout, glacier lilies, beargrass, Lewis monkeyflowers, paintbrush, Jones’ columbine and blanket flowers.

This puzzle is absolutely beautiful! We loved reading the back about how this company was started. Knowing that it is historically and geographically accurate makes it even better. My husband is very good at puzzles, so I am thrilled this one is challenging for him. We will be purchasing more in the future!

We own quite a few Xplorer maps, but I think this one is my favorite. The level of detail and beauty of the drawing is amazing. I have this map hanging in my office and I find myself looking at it regularly and remembering our trip. In fact, I used it this summer while I was planning our summer vacation. If you've been to the park, get one it looks great and will bring back awesome memories!
