Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of the most visited national park in the United States, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, found in eastern United States in Tennessee and North Caroline while also bordering the Cherokee Indian Reservation south of the park. Divided by the shared Tennessee/North Carolina border which follows the Appalachian Trail, the park encompasses the Great Smoky Mountains, a smaller range found within the Blue Ridge Mountains, both within the greater Appalachian range stretching from Canada to Alabama.

One of the most striking aspects of the mountains, included in its name, is a natural phenomena of high moisture evaporating and condensing at the perfect temperature, along with volatile organic compounds given off by the vegetation of the mountains that create a haze which gives the effect that the peaks of the mountains appear smoky.

Every year, an average of ten million visitors come to the park to enjoy the incredible hiking trails, visit the park’s many historical landmarks as well as spot a variety of species of the diverse wildlife within and around the park. Due to its proximity to the east coast, the park is rich in early American history with buildings still standing from some of the first European settlers who came to the place that would later become the United States of America. In the northwest corner of the park, in the larger area known as Cades Cove, remain pieces of history from the first European settlers such as: the John Oliver Place, Primitive Baptist Church, and the Cable Mill. Other historical sites throughout the park include: Mt. Cammerer Firetower, Noah “Bud” Ogle Cabin, Caldwell House, Mingus Mill and Davis-Queen House.

While a history fiend would find themselves in a dream experiencing the landmarks of the park, this map verifies the joy outdoor enthusiasts can find in the endless opportunities. People from all over the world come to enjoy the opportunities to hike, camp, backpack, swim, kayak and more  within the mountains of the park as well as the surrounding national forests and lakes including: Fontana Lake on the southern boundary of the park, Nantahala National Forest to the south, Cherokee National Forest to the southwest and northeast, and Pisgah National Forest to the southeast.

With opportunities to get out into nature, the park also is filled with experiences to also admire the high biodiversity of the park. Every section of the park has either unique wildlife to spot, or stunning wildflowers that catch the eye such as: elk, bobcats, river otters, wild turkeys, Northern flying squirrels, black-chinned red salamanders, red-cheeked salamanders, black bears, pileated woodpeckers as well as red aspen trees, columbine flowers, trillium, Turk’s cap lilies, Mountain Laurel and more.

The lithograph print by Chris Robitaille of Xplorer Maps is 24’’ wide by 18’’ tall.

I am shook! My wife and I are furnishing a home and we decided to get this and two other products by Xplorer. Not only are the products worth every penny (which you always worry about when you are spending more than small amounts as newlyweds), but there was a small hiccup in shipping and boy did Whitney make it right. Xplorer Maps is out there making things happen and we will be purchasing from them and future!
