Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of the San Francisco Bay showcasing historic landmarks, cultural symbols, as well as the major cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, Sausalito, Alameda, Daly City, and Mill Valley.

Located on the peninsula of the San Francisco Bay, jetting out into the Pacific Ocean off the northern coast of California, San Francisco named after St. Francis of Assisi, has stood as a center for finance, history, and culture for centuries since its founding in 1776 by settlers of New Spain. This map highlights structural remnants of its past in buildings such as Mission Dolores created in 1776, the Point Bonita Lighthouse built in 1855 to aid the hundreds of boats arriving to California after the first gold strike in 1848 that lead to thousands of people rushing to the state to find a fortune, Old St. Mary’s Cathedral which was founded in 1894 in the Chinatown neighborhood of downtown San Francisco, and Coit Tower built in the Telegraph Neighborhood in 1932.

Among the oldest landmark structures that set the scene for the cosmopolitan area, this map also confirms the array of historical periods and how they marked San Francisco with more contemporary and modern structures that attract visitors annually to the bay area such as: The Golden Gate Bridge built in 1933, the Oakland Bay Bridge built in 1933 to connect downtown San Francisco to Oakland while passing through Yerba Buena Island, the Transamerica Pyramid built from 1969-1972 in the Financial District in the northwest corner of San Francisco, as well as Embarcadero Plaza including the Ferry Building which marks the northern end of the Financial District of San Francisco. Not only have individual buildings left a living testament of San Francisco’s history, but entire districts such as Chinatown show a facet of San Francisco’s distinct history. This map marks the famous district of San Francisco which was created due to the high number of Chinese immigrants that came to the bay area during the gold rush era as well as during the years of the construction of the transcontinental railroad.

Over time, San Francisco transformed to be known as the cultural capital of counterculture movements centered around music that birthed artists such as Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin band) and more in the 1960s and 70s. This time period is acknowledged on the map in the Haight and Ashbury District, the location for the 1967 counterculture event, Summer of Love.

San Francisco has a truly distinct history that only continued to evolve which is seen in the varying styles of infrastructure, architecture and attractions that still stand today. Other unique structures and locations included on the map from a variety of time periods in the bay city include: the Victorian Painted Ladies of Oakland (which are commonly known from their reference in the popular television series, Full House), the Peace Pagoda building, Palace of Fine Arts, City Hall, Union Square, Ghirardelli Square, Lombard Street, Cable Car (America’s 1st mobile National Historic Landmark), Conservatory of Flowers, de Young Museum, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz Island and the Fillmore.

While San Francisco is a bustling metropolis, it also includes natural and human made outdoor recreational areas such as: Candlestick Park, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Presidio, and Lincoln Park. In the bays and points around the peninsula, locals and visitors enjoy distinct wildlife such as: California sea lion, humpback whales, harbor porpoises, bat rays, Pacific sea nettle, Giant Pacific octopus, rockfish, leopard sharks, white sturgeon, sevengill sharks, cormorants, brown pelicans and more.
