Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of Arches and Canyonlands National Park in the southwest desert region of Utah near the widely known city, Moab. This map celebrates both parks and some of the most unique geologic features found in the U.S. Both landscapes enchant park enthusiasts with geologic histories and landforms that leave visitors in a state of wonderment. Both landscapes rose in elevation due to the deposition of sediment in Canyonlands and the folding and wrinkling of the land in Arches that created a perfect canvas for nature to sculpt the famous arches and canyons of the parks. Canyonlands being the more southern park of the two and about four times the size of Arches, Canyonlands is home to the renowned rock formations such as: Island in the Sky, Druid Arch, Chocolate Drops, Panorama Point Overlook, Angel Arch, Chester Park, Pete’s Mesa, Washer Woman Arch Airport Tower and Angel Arch. Many of these canyons were carved into the landscape by the erosion of the Colorado and Green River due to the friability of the classic red desert sedimentary rocks.

Similar to the canyons formed in Canyonland, Arches National Park northeast of Canyonlands, was less like a perfect blanket of sediment rising over time, but the layering and doubling over of rock on top of other rock due to tectonic forces that created perfect anticlines that water could shape over centuries. The fracturing of rocks when folding left tiny cracks throughout the natural folds that water could continuously seep into and erode or further advance fracture processes that created longstanding arches that attract people from all over the world. The map showcases symbolic natural structures including: Landscape Arch, Skyline Arch, North and South Windows, Park Avenue, Courthouse Towers, Double Arch, Turret Arch, Balanced Rock, Tower Arch, Double O Arch, and Delicate Arch.

With such a singular geologic history as well as climate and ecosystem, the wildlife and plants found within the park are a niche group specific to the region comprised of: Midget-faded rattlesnakes, bobcats, Desert Bighorn sheep, Peregrine falcons, golden eagles, red foxes, porcupines, kangaroo rats, mule deer, mountain lions, pinyon jays, coyotes, side-blotched lizards and collard lizards.

The breathtaking landscape is matched by vibrant wildflowers found within the parks including: Indian Paintbrush, Claret Cup Cacti, Columbines, Blue Asters, and Scarlet Monkeyflowers. The rock formations, rivers and canyons within the parks make for a tourist’s playground perfect for recreation opportunities such as: rock climbing, rafting, biking, hiking, camping and more.
