Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of Santa Catalina island off the coast of Los Angeles, California showcasing the unique scenery, diverse wildlife, and endless adventure locations packed into 76 square miles. Located 29 miles off the coast of California in the Pacific Ocean, Santa Catalina Island is a true natural wonder as an ocean island with landscapes and wildlife characteristic not of a tropical forest, but of high mountain deserts and of the grasslands of the Great Plains.

While the island is the homeland of the Pimu Tongva people, over time the area fell from one deemed ownership to the next from Spain, to Mexico and finally the United States. This history had an impact that is notable today in the many Spanish names of bays, points, beaches, ranches, and landings across the island. Although it is one connected island, two distinct areas of the island are noted as the northern and southern sections due to the isthmus at Isthmus Cove that connects the two sections near the northern end of the island. Located just north of the isthmus is one of the two major village cities on the island, Two Harbors. On the opposite side of the island in the southern section is the true larger city, Avalon located right in Avalon Bay, a resort paradise often marked by the marine lifestyle with boats filling the bay.

Marked on the map by the winding orange path is the Trans Catalina Trail, a popular trail for hikers and backpackers runs from as far as Parson’s Landing in the northern section of the island, across Mt Orizaba (highest peak on the island at 2,102 ft), before winding down and ending in Avalon. This trail is not only allows hikers and backpackers to enjoy the splendor of the island but also allows hikers and backpackers to access a variety of well known hidden gem beaches and well known beaches mostly around Two Harbors and Avalon including: Descanso Bay, Crescent Beach, Lovers Cove, Pebbly Beach, Two Harbors Beach, Parson’s Landing, Little Harbor, Shark Harbor, Cottonwood Beach, Ben Weston Beach and more.

In addition to the unparalleled beaches that attract visitors for world class diving, the map also celebrates famous landmarks and wildlife that can be seen across the island as well as around the island at many bays and harbor points. Famous landmarks and natural sites include: Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden, the Casino at Descanso Bay, Haypress Recreation Area, Middle Ranch, El Rancho Escondido, Laura Stein Volunteer Camp, Black Jack Volunteer Camp, Airport in the Sky, Salta Verde point and others.

The incredible biodiversity across and along the shores of the island leave visitors in awe from a variety of species such as: blue whales, gray whales, sea lions, leopard sharks, Catalina flying fish, loggerhead sea turtles, giant black sea bass, Garibaldis, Pacific white-sided dolphins, Long-headed common dolphin, bottle-nose dolphin, as well as some surprising land animals found on the island including bison, Catalina island fox, Catalina island quail, Catalina side-blotched lizard and more.
