Original hand-drawn pen and ink / watercolor story map highlighting the unparalleled landscape and wildlife of Alaska. While one of, if not the most, remote state in the United States, this map includes some of the major cities in Alaska such as: Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau amongst many smaller rural towns and villages. Within the 665, 400 square miles that make Alaska the largest state in the U.S., one can find a variety of unique marine landforms including Inside Passage (a highly popular tourist attraction as it is a 500 mile long ship route that is frequented by cruise ships to see the beauty of Alaska’s southernmost point). Also, the map displays a bird watcher's dream location with the inclusion of the chain of volcanic islands, the Aleutian Islands. This chain of islands, found in the southwest part of the state jetting out into the Bering Sea, is not commonly inhabited by people but includes an abundance and diversity of bird species. Not only is it home to a variety of birds, but the iconic Pavlof Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes since 1980 in the U.S., is located within the chain of islands. The start of the islands is marked by Katmai National Park where locals and tourists enjoy seeing brown bears fishing in waterfalls.

Further north within the southern shores of Alaska, the map includes the Kenai Peninsula home to the Kenai Fjords National Park which is a must-stop location to experience glacial icefields and observe pods of orcas as well as the breaching of humpback whales.

Within the interior of Alaska one can find the highlight attraction, Denali National Park, which surrounds the focal point, Denali Peak, a word from the local Athabascan tribe given to the peak meaning “the high one.” Following a path from north starting near Anchorage on the southern end of Alaska, moving northwest along the west side of Denali, the map pays homage to the Iditarod National Historic trail, a trail to recognize a main highway of travel in an unforgiving region with harsh conditions. Following the trail further north, the map includes an aspect of Alaska that adds to its individuality, the portion of Alaska above the Arctic Circle. In this region one can find the Gates of the Arctic National Park as well as wildlife matching the region: Polar bears, arctic foxes, moose, caribou and more. Not only is there variety in the wildlife of the arctic region, but across the state in general including: Gray wolves, Dall Sheep, wolverines, Canadian Lynx, King Salmon, Halibut, King Crab, horned puffins, harbor seals, Arctic Tern, ptarmigan, walruses, Kodiak bears, musk ox, Bald Eagles, Mountain Goats and more.

The lithograph print by Chris Robitaille of Xplorer Maps is 24” tall and 18” wide.
