Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of the fourth-largest state in the United States, Montana. Bordering Canada, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming, Montana is found within the northwest United States and covers about 147,000 square miles, earning its title, Big Sky Country. This map showcases the distinct landscapes, flora and fauna found within the two major regions of the state, the mountains of the west and the plains of the east. The westernmost third of the state is a perfectly pieced jigsaw puzzle of mountain ranges that together form the greater Rocky Mountains as they pass through the state from north to south, just as the Continental Divide passes through the state from Glaciers National Park in the north and leaves the state in the southwest near the famed smelting city of Anaconda. Moving furthest east, the center and easternmost third of the state open up to the daunting, and expansive Great Plains, where Plains tribes led nomadic lives for thousands of years as they followed the bison, their most valued resource. Found across the state in a variety of ecosystems that thrive in coniferous forests, high mountain desert and the grasslands of the plains, Montana is home to a variety of plants and animals including: the Bitterroot flower, native trout, mountain lions, Grizzly bears, Bighorn sheep, elk, wolves, bald eagles, antelope and more.

Not only a mountainous marvel, but Montana is also a hydrological wonder as it is home to many creeks and streams that form the headwaters of major rivers that pass through the rest of the United States. This map highlights the start of the Missouri River in southwest Montana near Bozeman at Three Forks where the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin rivers converge to form the headwaters of the Missoula River. Following the course of the river, the map showcases its path (which also marks the path Lewis and Clark and Sacagwea followed as they traveled against the current of the Missouri River on their way to the Pacific Ocean) as it flows through central and northeast Montana before it exits the state through North Dakota. Not only does the map celebrate the Missouri River, but also the impressive Yellowstone River, which starts in Wyoming and flows north through Montana until it drains into the Missouri River right as it crosses the Montana/North Dakota border. Montana is home to major rivers but also, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, Flathead Lake. Although the lake is unique due to its volume, Flathead Lake is also special due to its location with its southern half located within the Flathead Indian Reservation, home to the Confederated Kootenai Salish Tribes. The Flathead Indian Reservation is one of the eight total reservations in Montana which are home to Montana’s twelve tribal nations. With a variety of water sources from creeks, alpine lakes and major rivers, Montana is a hub for water recreation. People from all over the world come for unparalleled fly fishing, rafting, floating, skiing, etc.

While millions of people visit Montana for water recreation, there are endless opportunities to experience the all-encompassing splendor of Montana’s outdoors. Glacier National Park located in northwest Montana bordering Canada, attracts on average 3 million visitors per year to enjoy incredible hiking as well as spot magnificent wildlife and the remaining glaciers that gave the park its name. In the opposite direction of Glacier, Yellowstone National Park extends across the southern border of Montana from Wyoming where people come to see wildlife like bison, wolves, and elk as well as admire the wonder of the park’s hydrothermal features including 10,000 different forms of hot springs, geysers, mudpots and fumaroles.

With adventure available in every direction and during every season, Montana is the perfect place for any and every outdoor enthusiast. Despite having a smaller population compared to other states, this map brings to life the many ways in which Montana is a dream to many with its unique history, culture, landscapes, wildlife and recreation.
