An original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of the second oldest national park in the United States, Sequoia National Park, as well as the bordering national park just north of Sequoia, Kings Canyon National Park. Located in east-central California situated within the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are home to the world’s largest trees, giant sequoias. While managed and operated by the same park system, Sequoia and Kings Canyon are separate national parks that were created to celebrate and protect the magnificent sequoias found within both parks.

Created in 1890 to protect the prized sequoia trees of the park from logging, Sequoia National Park was the first national park created to protect a living organism. Within the park, visitors can experience the splendor of the tremendous trees by visiting the Giant Forest in the northwest section of the park which includes five of the world's ten largest trees. The largest of those five, General Sherman Tree, has an unbelievable volume and age with a height of 275 feet and a width of 36 feet, as well as a most recent age estimate of about 2,200 years old! While more than one million come to Sequoia National Park each year to see and experience the sequoia trees, the park also attracts visitors for its diverse plants, wildlife and a variety of unique natural landforms.  Plants and wildlife include: Sierra Purple Shooting Stars, Blue lupine, Pacific fishers, yellow-legged frogs, and peregrine falcons. Along with the Giant Forest, other natural features and landscapes that attract visitors include: Mount Whitney, Moro Rock, Crystal Cave, Tunnel Rock, Hospital Rock, Tokopah Falls, as well as the human made, Wuksachi Lodge and Pumpkin Hollow Bridge.

Fifty years after Sequoia National Park was established, Kings Canyon was established as a national park in 1940 to protect a group of sequoias not located in the more common sequoia groves found within the first park. Adding King Canyon as a contiguous park not only added to the group of protected sequoias, but it added stunning canyons, meadows, and waterfalls to the list for park visitors to enjoy. Within the 772 square miles Kings Canyon National Park encompasses, adventurers can experience a variety of natural wonder including: General Grant Tree, Grant Grove, John Muir Lodge, Hume Lake, Boyden Cave, Fallen Monarch, Zumwalt Meadow, Mist Falls, Roaring River Falls, Mount Goddard, North Palisade, McClure Meadow, John Muir Rock and more.

While the opportunities to see incredible natural and human made sites are abundant, the list of plants and wildlife to spot in the park is endless featuring: marmot, red foxes, Great Grey owls, stellar jays, Western Tanagers, Belted Kingfisher, mule deer, Bighorn sheep, and black bears. The colors of vibrant wildflowers such as Purple Owl’s Clover, California poppies, Yellow Monkeyflowers vibrant landscapes.

Thank you so much for creating this map of Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. From the time my husband was a small boy, he and his family camped every summer at Stoney Creek Campground; trout fishing, swimming, hiking, and overall having fun in nature. He has backpacked the high country many times to Jennie Lakes with his daughters, nephews and friends. We still go to the park every summer to camp or at least spend the day. We have been there for the Nation's Christmas Tree celebration, 4th of July Parade in Wilsonia Village, Hume Lake Christian Camp, Cedar Grove and Boyden Cave. This map will be his 65th Birthday/Father's Day surprise. If you have not ever made the trip to Central California's other National Parks, it is well worth the trip. So many great sights to see and stunning vistas of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Kings Canyon River gorge. This map portrays the park in all it's glory!
