Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of North Cascades National Park of northern Washington bordering the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Located on the northern Washington border in the Pacific Northwest United States, North Cascades National Park is a true gem and a unique park for its rugged terrain and glacial marked landscape with over 300 glaciers in the park while only being a three hour drive from Seattle. Named after the North Cascade mountain range, a subrange of the greater Cascade Mountains which extend from northern California to northern British Columbia, the park is a mountaineer's dream adventure. The park is divided into two units, North Unit which contains the Picket Range and South Unit, by the Skagit River. This map highlights the abundance of high mountain peaks found across both units of of the park, specifically including the highest peak, Goode Mountain at 9,220 ft, as well as the most noteworthy peak due to its reputation for being even more photogenic, Mt Shuksan standing at 9131 ft, located in the northwest area of the North Unit. While not at high but still as impressive in immensity and magnificence are various other peaks surrounding the park including: Buckner Mountain (9112 ft.), Mount Logan, (9087 ft.), Mount Spickard (8979 ft.), Silver Star Mountain (8876 ft.), Tower Mountain (8,444 ft), and others.

While visitors can enjoy the views of noteworthy mountains and peaks, they can also experience the beauty of the landscape throughout endless hiking trails as well as in the two major designated recreational areas of the park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area in the North Unit and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area in the southern most point of South Unit. Ross Lake National Recreation Area encompasses Ross Lake as it extends in the eastern section of North Unit. Also, Lake Chelan National Recreation Area offers an abundance of once-in-a-lifetime campgrounds that allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of the landscape such as Rainbow Falls and catch a glimpse of unbelievable wildlife.

Undoubtedly the park displays unparalleled natural beauty in its peaks, glaciers, lakes and wildlife; however, the beauty doesn’t stop at the park’s borders. Rather, this map verifies the endless opportunities surrounding the park for visitors to enjoy the environment of the Cascades including: Wenatchee National Forest, the Cascade Pass (which is within the park while also extending beyond the park), Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, Mount Baker Ski Resort, Baker Lake Resort, Nooksack Ridge, Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park, Skagit Valley Provincial Park, Manning Provincial Park, as well as the Pacific Crest Trail which runs along the eastern border of the park before crossing through the South Unit of the park.

Matching the charm of the landscape, the wildlife of the park comes in a variety and abundance across all parts of the part including wildlife such as: Grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, elk, pink salmon, chum salmon, sockeye salmon, coho salmon, Chinook salmon, mountain goats, as well as an array of birds including Townsend warblers, thrush, Rufous hummingbirds, bald eagles, stellar jays, and harlequin ducks.
