Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of Olympic National Park situated on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state, surrounded by Olympic National Forest and sprawling across close to 1 million acres. Due to its location and proximity to ocean access with the Straits of Juan de Fuca, the separate shoreline section of the park along the west coast of Washington on the Pacific Ocean, and Hood Canal of the Puget Sound, the climate and environment of Olympic National Park are highly impacted by ocean winds and precipitation.

With one section of the park, Olympic Wilderness and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary stretching 73 miles along the Olympic Peninsula from Shi Shi Beach in the north to South Beach of Kalaloch, this narrow stretch of the park often is filled with dramatic ocean views of ocean waves rolling up to jagged cliffs as well as picturesque beaches and impressive geologic rock formations. Major landmark sites that attract visitors featured on the map include: Cape Flattery, Point of the Arches, the Ozette Indian Reservation, the Quileute Indian Reservation, Hoh Indian Reservation and Giant’s Graveyard south of Taylor Point. Stunning beaches with vibrant green temperate rainforest growth and abrupt rock formations emerging from the coast can be found at beaches such as: Kalaloch beaches 1, 2, 3, and 4, Ruby Beach, First and Second beach at La Push, Rialto Beach, as well as many other points and bays.

Further inland on the peninsula, the second section of park is a true ecological gem with varying environments and landscapes from temperate rainforests, glaciers, and high alpine peaks filled with equally unique and diverse plants and wildlife. In the center of the park, Mount Olympus towers at 7,980 ft with its peak coated in glaciers including: Blue Glacier, White Glacier, Hubert Glacier, Hoh Glacier, Humes Glacier and Jefferson Glacier. Just northwest of the peak is true a natural wonder in being so unique and different from any other area in the United States, this area being the Hoh Rain Forest. Marked by a variety of thriving flora including Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock and Big Leaf Maple trees, these species create the scene of a lush, green growth in every direction. This type of vegetation is possible due to the amount of precipitation the forest receives each year ringing in around 12 feet of rain each year deeming the area as an oceanic climate.

In addition to the coastline, Mount Olympus and the Hoh Rain Forest, another natural attraction accessible by hiking and by car that visitors come to the park to see is Hurricane Ridge. Only a 17 mile drive from the north entrance to the park, Port Angeles, Hurricane Ridge is one of the main attractions of the park for which people can experience hiking, skiing, snowboarding and simply by driving along the road which gives a full view of the ridge. The Ridge is part of the Olympic Mountains and offers stunning views of peaks such as: Hurricane Hill, Steeple Rock, Eagle Point, Obstruction and more.

While adventures can be found across the entire park through land recreation opportunities, adventurers can also enjoy the many ways to recreate around and along bodies of water such as: Ozette Lake, Lake Crescent, Neah Bay, Marymere Falls, Sol Duc Fall along the Sol Duc River, Sequim Bay, Discovery Bay, Lake Cushman, Lake Quinault, Hoh River, Ewha River and more.

Not only does the park feature off-grid, backcountry adventures but visitors can also visit the more developed areas and sites including: Lake Crescent Lodge, Log Cabin Resort, Lake Quinault Lodge, Enchanted Valley Chalet, Kestner Homestead, Humes Ranch Homestead, Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort as well as many charming campground locations throughout the park.

Whether seen on a hiking trail, along the shoreline, or by car traversing the park, the climate of the park while also having ample water and ocean access creates a gallery of a variety of flora and fauna to spot. Along the shoreline visitors can catch a glimpse of gray whales, sea otters, and sea stars. Further inland on land and in the rivers animals to be seen are: cougars, Ozette sockeye, bald eagles, chinook salmon, Roosevelt elk, almond scented millipedes, banana slugs, spotted owls, Olympic marmot, fishers, Western swallowtails, Flett’s violet, indian paintbrush, Piper’s bellflowers, rhododendrons, and skunk cabbages.

The lithograph print by Chris Robitaille of Xplorer Maps is 24 inches wide by 18 inches tall.
