Xploring Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area

At Xplorer Maps (a small family business based in Missoula, Montana) our mission is to "Connect People and Place" through hand-drawn story maps. With over 60 maps in the collection, these pieces of art capture the essence of various destinations, in turn making the outdoors more accessible for adventurers of all ages and abilities. One of these maps features Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area, a jaw dropping desert oasis JUST outside of Las Vegas. This area, known for striking red sandstone formations, is perfect for a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing, birding, and simply escaping the hustle and bustle of “The Vegas Strip”.

As the “Lead Storyteller” for Xplorer Maps, I had the opportunity to travel to many of the National Parks in southern Utah during the winter of 2024. The first stop of this trip was none other than the Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area. It’s a mouthful, but it’s important to include “Natural Conservation Area” in the description. Why? Well, I am glad you asked…

What is a Natural Conservation Area?

A Natural Conservation Area (NCA) is a protected land designation aimed at preserving the natural environment and its ecosystems. The goal is to safeguard the landscape's unique features—whether geological, ecological, or cultural—while allowing for sustainable recreational use. In the case of Red Rock Canyon, the NCA ensures the protection of the area's biodiversity, while still offering opportunities for people to enjoy its beauty and learn about its history.

An Ideal Day at Red Rock Canyon

An ideal day at Red Rock Canyon starts early with a sunrise hike. We recommend starting with the Calico Hills Trail, which offers incredible views of the canyon and its vibrant red rock formations. Afterward, take a break to relax and enjoy the desert landscape, perhaps spotting some wildlife along the way.

For families, the Lost Creek Children’s Discovery Trail is a short and easy hike that introduces younger adventurers to the wonders of nature. It’s ideal for children and gives them a hands-on learning experience.

Later, for those interested in climbing, the White Rock Mountain area provides beginner and intermediate routes with breathtaking views. After a successful climb, unwind with a scenic drive along the 13-mile Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive, where you can stop at lookout points and take in the beauty of the desert. Please take note, this is a one way road (we had to learn this the hard way, haha).

Safety Considerations

While Red Rock Canyon is a safe and accessible destination, visitors should be mindful of a few important safety tips. Always bring plenty of water, especially in the summer months when temperatures can soar. Wear appropriate footwear for hiking and climbing, and be prepared for sudden changes in weather. If you plan to climb, ensure you have proper gear and experience or are climbing with someone who does. It’s also important to check trail conditions before heading out, as certain trails may be closed due to weather or maintenance.

History and the Southern Nevada Conservancy

We have a number of “Park Partners” around the country and one of them is none other than the Southern Nevada Conservancy (SNC). SNC plays a critical role in the management and preservation of Red Rock Canyon. As a non-profit organization, the SNC partners with the Bureau of Land Management to support conservation efforts and enhance the visitor experience. Through educational programs, trail maintenance, and fundraising, the SNC helps protect Red Rock Canyon’s unique environment while also providing resources for visitors to enjoy it responsibly.

Geology: Why Red Rock Canyon is a Climber’s Paradise

While we were xploring Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area, we met a lot of climbers. Actually, it seemed like every other person came from out of state to climb there. Not to mention, some of these climbers had been coming annually for decades.

The geology of Red Rock Canyon is both fascinating and beautiful. The canyon is home to vibrant red and orange sandstone formations that have been shaped over millions of years. The area's rock layers, including the famous Aztec Sandstone, offer a variety of climbing routes, from cracks and slabs to overhangs and towers. The rock’s stability, combined with its unique texture, makes Red Rock Canyon a premier climbing destination for enthusiasts of all skill levels. Please remember it’s extremely dangerous to climb in Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area if it has been raining or if rain is expected.
