Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of Badlands National Park located in southwestern South Dakota. The map boasts of the park’s unmatched natural landforms of eroded buttes and mounds as well as towering spires that rise up from the prairie grasslands surrounding the park. The park’s symbolic buttes, mounds and spires are the result of many years of deposition and erosion that created the striations of mustard yellow and rich red seen in the tops of the mounds and layers of the buttes.
The park consists of three distinct areas starting in the south with the Stronghold Unit, moving further north to the almost narrow land isthmus of the park connecting the south to the north as the Badlands Wilderness Area, and finally ending with the Northern Unit. The park also has a detached unit jetting out southeast with the Palmer Creek Unit. Not only does the park feature units, but the southern section is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in which the National Parks co-manages the park with the Oglala Lakota Tribe. In the southern half of the park, visitors can enjoy impressive landforms such as Vulture Peak, Red Shirt Table Overlook, Yellow Mounds, Cedar Pass (and Cedar Pass Lodge) and a breathtaking view from Sheep Mountain Table in the center of the park.
In the Northern Unit, one can experience the incredible view from the Pinnacles Overlook, Prairie Wind Overlook, and Big Badlands Overlook. Throughout all units of the park and the surrounding grasslands one can enjoy seeing the wide array of plants and animals such as: bison, elk, bighorn sheep, burrowing owls, plains leopard frogs, snapping turtles, pronghorn antelope, bobcats, mountain bluebirds, meadowlarks, coyotes, swift foxes, badgers, black-footed ferrets, prairie rattlesnakes, bald eagles, golden eagles, and turkey vultures. While visitors can enjoy the variety of wildlife the prairie grassland environment supports, something found in few other state parks, are the fossils of dinosaurs that occupied the region such as the gigantic plains cat Hoplophoneus, as well as an equally gigantic rhino relative Brontothere.
