Original hand-drawn pen and ink/watercolor story map of Oregon highlighting its unparalleled west coast as well as its moist temperate coniferous biomes that invite a variety of marine and land wildlife. This map also includes major cities such as: Portland, Salem, Eugene, Medford, and Bend.

The 33rd state shares borders with the Pacific Ocean to the west, Washington to the north, California and Nevada to the south, and Idaho to the east. Oregon’s location in the far west made the state a destination for settlers in the late 1800s as they followed the path to advertised free land and the hope and dream of starting a new life. Due to its location in the Pacific Northwest, the Coast Range Mountains form the west coast of the state and the Cascade Mountains pass through the state from north to south about 100 miles inland from the ocean. This stretch of mountains creates a unique rain effect combined with the wind that divides Oregon into two very distinct ecoregions with the western third of the state receiving high precipitation creating lush forests. The mountains create a rain shadow effect that leaves the eastern half of the state receiving much less rain creating high desert biomes with matching wildlife.

The Oregon coast runs a total of 363 miles with frequent stops of cape towns offering the chance to see picturesque lighthouses such as Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and Cape Blanco Whitehouse as well as stunning marine wildlife such as: gray whales, humpback whales, blue whales, sea lions, harbor seals, bottlenose dolphins, Pacific white-sided dolphins, dungeness crab, starfish, and chinook salmon. The coast is also a high attraction destination to visit Lewis and Clark’s final stop in Fort Clatsop where they reached the Pacific Ocean, explore the beaches, indulge in authentic seafood, as well as view and explore other unique natural features such as caves or the Oregon Dunes (popular for sandboarding).  In the western third of the state, one can find features such as: Portland Rose Gardens, Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, Willamette Valley Vineyard, Oregon State Capitol Building, Multnomah Falls, Timberline Lodge located on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, Smith Rock, Diamond Peak, Crater Lake (within Crater Lake National Park), Klamath Falls, Upper Klamath Lake, and the Oregon caves.

Further inland, on the eastern side of the state, on the opposite side of the rain shadow, one can notice the complete transformation from a temperate rainforest to a dryer, high mountain desert. Within this ecosystem are well known sites and landscapes such as: the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Steens Mountain, Font Rock, Painted Hills, Owyhee River, Hells Canyon on the Snake River, the Columbia River Gorge, Arch Rock. Also located in the eastern section of the state are the Umatilla Indian Reservation and the Nez Perce National Historical Park (the tribe of the famous Nez Perce leader, Chief Joseph). Within this section of the state is wildlife that thrives on the desert, grassland environment east of the cascades such as: mule deer, pronghorns, Rocky Mountain Elk, pileated woodpeckers Great horned owl, mountain lions, Bighorn Sheep, Bald Eagles, and Blue Herons.
